We sell and install gutter guards, so it might seem strange that we keep a page listing their problems. But guards are one of the most oversold products in home services, and a company that recommends them honestly should be able to tell you when not to buy them.
The real problems
They don't end maintenance. Every guard type still needs occasional attention — debris resting on top, mesh filming over with pollen, corners collecting what the roof valleys concentrate. Guards turn a hard biannual chore into an easy occasional one. Any pitch beyond that is a pitch — the full honest version is here.
The wrong guard is worse than no guard. A cheap screen under a live oak collects catkin felt on top of it and packs solid, and now the debris is harder to clear than it was in an open trough. Guard type has to match tree type, or the money is wasted — the tiers compared honestly.
They hide failing gutters. A guard installed over bad slope or opened seams covers the evidence while water keeps working on the fascia. Any honest retrofit starts with a slope-and-seam check underneath.
Heavy Texas rain tests them. Some designs shed water past the gutter in cloudburst rain on steep roofs. Roof pitch belongs in the recommendation.
When to skip guards entirely
- Young, open lots. If the trees over your roof are a decade from mattering, guards are money that can wait. Spend it on downspout extensions instead.
- Light-drop situations. If your gutters need clearing once every year or two, a guard's payback period is long. A cleaning schedule may simply be cheaper.
- Gutters that need work first. Slope problems, opened seams, tired fascia — fix the system before you put a lid on it. The tune-up comes first.
When they're genuinely worth it
Heavy live oak or pecan canopy over the roof — the lots where clearing is a twice-a-year certainty and skipping a season means overflow damage. On those homes, the right guard is one of the best money-per-headache purchases available. Which situation is yours is a five-minute look up from your yard, and that look is free.
