The gutter guard tiers: entry, mid, premium — honestly compared

We carry several guard types at different price points, and the honest way to compare them isn't "good, better, best." It's "which debris problem does each one actually solve?"

Entry tier: screens

Metal or heavy plastic screen that sits over the gutter opening. It stops the big stuff — whole leaves, twigs, the obvious debris. What it doesn't stop: small material like pecan leaflets working through the openings, and fine debris settling on top. Under light canopy, a screen genuinely helps. Under a live oak, catkins drape through and over it, and you're back on the ladder.

Fits: open-ish lots, light or seasonal drop, budget-first decisions.

Mid tier: solid covers and larger perforated systems

Solid surface-tension covers shed leaves off the front while water wraps into the gutter; larger perforated panels block most leaf material while passing water fast. Both handle ordinary leaf drop well and shrug off the volume that overwhelms screens. Their limit is the fine stuff — catkin strings and grit can still find their way in or accumulate on top, and heavy Texas downpours test surface-tension designs on steep roofs.

Fits: moderate canopy, mixed trees, most established neighborhoods.

Premium tier: micro-mesh

Fine stainless mesh over a rigid frame. Nothing bigger than grit dust gets through — this is the tier that actually answers live oak catkins and pecan leaflets. The trade-off is price, and the honest caveat: fine debris and pollen can film the mesh surface over time, so it wants an occasional rinse to keep flowing at full speed.

Fits: heavy live oak or pecan canopy — the lots where lesser guards keep you on the ladder anyway.

What no tier does

None of them make gutters maintenance-free, whatever the brochure says — the full honest version is in do guards mean never cleaning again? The right call comes from looking at what's actually over your roof, which is part of every free on-site estimate.
